Ingredients

Scale

1 (12-pack) King’s Hawaiian Rolls

3 large eggs

¾ cup half-and-half or whole milk

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

2 tablespoons brown sugar

Pinch of salt

4 tablespoons butter (for cooking)

For Serving: Powdered sugar, fresh fruit, maple syrup

Instructions

  • Prepare the Custard:
    • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and half-and-half until fully combined.
    • Whisk in the vanilla, cinnamon, brown sugar, and salt until smooth.
  • Prep the Rolls:
    • Use a toothpick or skewer to poke several holes in the bottom of each roll to help absorb the custard.
  • Soak the Rolls:
    • Working in batches, dip the rolls into the custard mixture and let them soak for about 30 seconds, turning to coat all sides.
    • Do not soak for too long to prevent them from becoming soggy.
  • Cook the French Toast:
    • Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
    • Cook the soaked rolls for 30-60 seconds per side, turning carefully with a spatula to crisp all sides evenly.
  • Serve:
    • Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar and topped with fresh fruit and maple syrup if desired.

Notes

  • Hawaiian rolls are naturally sweet, so adjust the sugar in the custard to taste.
  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or a splash of orange zest.
  • These can be made ahead and reheated in the oven at 300°F (150°C) for 5 minutes.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
